For the Christian, when it comes to making personal life decisions, there are obviously many set laws of wisdom and commands of God in Scripture to obey when applicable. And of course doing our due diligence and practical deduction, and using wisdom based on the information at hand, are also extremely important when it comes to choices we must make.
But in many life circumstances, various options we are compelled to choose from have no moral or obviously negative implications or they are simply morally ambigious in nature.
There are a million and one factors and conditions that we simply cannot see, know, observe, or contemplate when facing either major OR even minor life decisions.
When decisions must be made somewhat quickly, endless potential possibilities and effects are an even more pressing reality.
For this reason, we MUST ultimately rely on the Holy Spirit to guide us in our decision making.
I have had times in my life where I could not see what was best for me by a long shot. I was expecting a fulfilled dream and promise to look radically different than what the Lord ultimately had in mind for me.
And let me tell you, in more than one instance, God had to do a few seeming miracles to get my attention, redirect me, and keep me on the right path.
The fact that He used my temporary stalls and detours for my good and for His purposes and glory, was a Scriptural promise fulfilled for me personally, for which I am most grateful.
But those surprise outcomes the Lord brought about, taught me a lot about the divine truth that He commands me to rely on Him and not on myself.
He commands me to trust Him and to honor HIM as my God, and not try and decide for myself what I think is best for me.
These divine revealings of unexpected occurrences in my life have also taught me that things are not always what they seem. I cannot let my flesh and my prejudices, pre-conceived notions, fears and misgivings stop me from accepting the plans of God for my time on this earth. His way is ALWAYS best, even when it doesn't make sense to me.
When God is in the "driver's seat" of our lives, we can accept His plan to take us up radical and sometimes scary, illogical or obscure paths that challenge us and call us to accept a greater measure of faith from His hand and demand that we die to ourselves in so many ways.
There are difficult or unconventional choices to which people in the world would simply choose to say "no" to. Choices those of us in Christ are compelled by divine providence to shout out a resounding, albeit often shaky, "yes" to receiving.
By saying "yes" to what may not make sense to our personal sensibilities but are the perfect will of God, we are shown to be followers of Christ who really WILL choose to follow Him where'er He leads us, come what may.
Being "along for the ride with Christ in the driver's seat," has been immensely comforting and reassuring to me.
These experiences have displayed so many Scriptural truths right before my eyes. Ie: The impossible is more than possible, what the Lord has for me cannot be stolen or changed, and that I don't have to figure out what's best for me when I have no way of knowing in varying circumstances life throws at me.
God is faithful to keep His children who love Him and are called according to His purposes right where He wants us. We can be utterly dependent on Him without having to always understand and this is deeply reassuring.
Trust in the Lord with all your heart,
and do not lean on your own understanding.
In all your ways acknowledge him,
and he will make straight your paths.- Proverbs 3:5-6
"Therefore, brothers and sisters, we have an obligation—but it is not to the flesh, to live according to it. For if you live according to the flesh, you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the misdeeds of the body, you will live."- Romans 8:12-15
"And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose"- Romans 8:28
"Therefore, my beloved, just as you have always obeyed, not only in my presence, but now even more in my absence, continue to work out your salvation with fear and trembling. For it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good purpose. Do everything without complaining or arguing"- Philippians 2:12-14
"And He died for all, that those who live should no longer live for themselves, but for Him who died for them and was raised again. So from now on we regard no one according to the flesh. Although we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer. Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away. Behold, the new has come!"- 2 Corinthians 5:15-17
The LORD says, “I will guide you along the best pathway for your life. I will advise you and watch over you."- Psalm 32:8
The heart of man plans his way, but the LORD establishes his steps. - Proverbs 16:9
